2015 Member News

First, thank you again for being a member!   We have 220 members so far!  Those of you who have purchased $50 memberships and lifetime memberships are providing an important operating cushion for the store…and earning it back each time you shop.  Thank You!

BSM three months in:  How is it going?
We are pleased to report that Boone Street Market sales have been stronger than the original estimates we made before the store opened.  Average sales for our first three months are $24,000/month.  This means we have already helped local producers earn $60,000, and between the farmers market and the store, we can conceivably add $500,000 to the local economy this year! While the store will not break even on operating expenses until our sales are about $35,000/month, we are off to a very good start, and we hope to hit that target with the addition of the kitchen and during the produce-filled summer months on the horizon.

Thanks to everyone who has shopped at the store, please keep coming back!

Member special promotion:  10% off on Saturday, Feb 7th
Come to Boone Street Market for lunch!  We will celebrate the grand opening of our kitchen this Saturday.  10% discount for members on any purchase from the kitchen or from the store!

Hours Change:  9 am-6 pm Weekdays, 10-5 Saturdays
For the remainder of the winter, we are going to open and close a little earlier.  This is in response to customer traffic patterns--we anticipate extending hours to 7 pm in the spring.

Online ordering update
Our original vision was to offer online ordering from store inventory for our members.  This has proven far more complicated than we anticipated.  Our ETSU computing advisors have suggested there is simply no feasible way to do what we want at this time.  For that, we apologize!  But we’re not giving up…..read on:

We want you to have some shopping perks—we’ll just have to do it another way.  Please pick up the phone and call anytime during store hours (753-4722).  Matt or Veronica or the volunteer cashier on duty will be happy to answer questions about a product you are looking for, and we’ll set it aside for you to come and pick up.  Please feel free to use this good old fashioned personalized service any time!  We mean it!

Volunteer opportunity for drivers
Volunteers are needed for all-day drives to the Asheville area and West Jefferson, NC, to pick up products for the store.  We will provide a detailed itinerary and reimburse you 20 cents per mile.  If interested, please talk to Matt.

Kitchen needs:
If anyone has extras, we could still use these items to equip our kitchen: plates and bowls, drinking glasses (not mugs), colanders/mesh strainers, storage containers, and a grater.

JFM News
Many have asked about the farmers market, and the answer is Yes! the Saturday Jonesborough Farmers Market will be back in its East Courthouse Square location starting in May.  Preparations are well underway for another wonderful season of the outdoor market; our managers are attending conferences this spring and are already full of plans and ideas for our 8th market season.  More news closer to time!   Key Dates:  May 2nd, Saturday Market opens; August 22, 5th Annual Farm to Table Dinner

We're open!

We were honored to have a large crowd of market supporters at our opening ceremonies today, including our special ribbon-cutting guests: TN Senator Rusty Crowe, UDSA Rural Development Area Director Joe Woody, Jonesborough Mayor Kelly Wolfe, and TN Commissioner of Agriculture Julius Johnson.  Ribbon proudly held in place by Karen Childress and Curtis Buchanan.

Not only did guests enjoy refreshments from local products, but they got to be the first shoppers....we added 3 new memberships and sold $1000 worth of local goods today! We're off and running!

Again, a sincere THANK YOU to the MANY, MANY donors, volunteers, board members and cheerleaders who have helped us get to this exciting moment--Now please come see us (and shop!) at Boone Street Market!

Hours are:  Monday-Friday, 10am-7pm, Saturdays (until May) 10am-5pm.

Thank you, everyone--
Karen

The map!

This is something Curtis has been making plans for since we first started thinking about a store: a map that shows a 50-and 100-mile radius around Jonesborough, with pins to show the location of the farms and producers that supply the store.

Well, now we've got it!  Jake Tittle created our map, Matt got it printed, and Curtis and I began putting pins in the map on Saturday.  Right now there are 40 producers "pinned" and we are not finished yet!

The map will greet you as you enter the store.  Come see it at the ribbon cutting on Weds (10/29 11am) or anytime thereafter!!!
